I consider myself an illustrator. It is important for me to document and observe. I travel with a notebook and a pen. I like to draw the neighbourhood, the streetcar, the subway, my surroundings, the landscape, the city, the people the dogs the cats and the situation. Drawing allows me to look and by drawing to discover what I drew by “Just Looking”.

“For the Artist Drawing is Discovery. And that is not just a slick phrase, it is quite literally true. It is the actual act of drawing, that forces the artist to look at the object in front of him to dissect in his minds eye and put it together again; or, if he is drawing from memory, that forces him to dredge his own mind, to discover the content of his own store of past observations.”
    John Berger

“Carry a notebook with you and make drawings that will be useful for your painting – informatory drawings – maybe the gesture of a couple of hands. The action of people walking down the street; feet in a trolley car; mailboxes and street lamps; a pile of dishes on a table; the sleeve of a coat hung over a chair; all these are details, studies you should save as material for making pictures. Most important is to observe while you are drawing, so that you enrich your memory. Soon you will not need to refer to your sketches.”
    John Sloan

Paintings in egg tempera and egg tempera and oil are done in the manner described by D. V. Thompson and C. Cennini. Those in acrylic follow a similar practice of an under drawing, scumbling and glazing.
